Does Weather Affect Hyperhidrosis?

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Unlike with regular levels of sweating, where the body produces perspiration in order to regulate body temperature and help the body cool off after strenuous physical activity or in hot weather, people affected by hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) perspire profusely independent of temperature or physical exertion.

The experts at the Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence offer the best treatment for excessive sweating in Los Angeles.

Treatment for Excessive Sweating

What Causes Excessive Sweating?

Patients suffering from hyperhidrosis can produce anywhere from four to five times the normal amount of sweat necessary to regulate body temperature, which can be incredibly uncomfortable on a physical level, but also place a great strain on everything from social and professional interactions to overall quality of life.

Click here to learn more about the causes and potential treatment options for hyperhidrosis.

The most common areas of the body usually affected by hyperhidrosis are:

  • Palms
  • Feet
  • Armpits
  • Face
  • Groin

While there is no clearly known cause for the development of the condition, some of the most common triggers for excessive sweating tend to be:

  • Nervousness
  • Excitement
  • Anxiety (For example, many patients become stressed about their sweating, or the potential to start sweating at awkward times, which in turn causes the hyperhidrosis to kick in.)
  • Certain foods and stimulants, like caffeine and nicotine, and even certain smells in some cases can also serve as triggers.

How is Excessive Sweating Treated?

A minimally invasive procedure known as thorascopic sympathectomy has been highly effective in disrupting the nerve signals that overstimulate the sweat glands that lead to hyperhidrosis. Patients that have undergone the procedure have reported life changing results, with improvement not only in their physical comfort levels, but social and interpersonal relationships as well.

Steps For Preventing Kidney Stones

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Kidney stones generally result from a combination of several risk factors that can increase the likelihood of their development, rather than one or two definitive causes. Knowing the risk factors can help patients take certain precautions that may help to minimize their chances of developing stones in their urinary tract.

At Comprehensive Urology in Los Angeles, expert urologists provide patients with expert treatment for kidney stones in Beverly Hills each year.

Different Types of Stones and Their Causes

The best way for a urologist to determine the potential cause of the formation of stones is to examine the type. Many kidney stones pass on their own without causing major discomfort or pain, but when symptoms are present, especially if they are severe or accompanied by signs of potential infection like fever or bleeding, it’s important that patients seek medical attention as quickly as possible to rule out serious problems.

Calcium stones are the most common type of kidney stone, and usually result from the concentrations of calcium found in certain foods and as a byproduct of the liver.

Cystine stones are the result of a hereditary disorder that causes the kidneys to secrete higher concentrations of certain amino acids.

Uric acid stones typically result from severe dehydration and insufficient fluid intake and losing too much fluid. Consuming an especially high protein diet, or suffering from gout and certain genetic factors can also be risk factors for this type of stone.

Struvite stones are usually the result of an infection. The onset of this type of stone can be acute and present little to no symptoms in the patient.

When to See a Doctor for Shoulder Pain

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

As one of the most overused joints in the body, the shoulder can be prone to injury either through physical activity and sports, or as a result of mechanical wear and tear over time. A certain degree of strain or mild discomfort is not necessarily cause for alarm, but when pain becomes severe and disruptive and does not subside over time, the best course of action is to see a specialist.

Dr. Steven Meier is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at Meier Orthopedic Sports Medicine and regularly performs expert shoulder surgery in Los Angeles.

What are Some of the Most Common Causes of Shoulder Pain?

People who engage in certain activities or play particular sports that require repeated overhead reaching and waving motions of the arm and shoulder can be at a greater risk of suffering rotator cuff tears or shoulder injuries. Some of the most common sports and activities that can stress the shoulder and cause pain include:

  • Swimming
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball
  • Baseball
  • Weightlifting
  • Archery

Symptoms of a Rotator Cuff Tear

Usually the first and most common symptom of a strain or injury to the rotator cuff is described as a dull ache in the shoulder, and difficulty sleeping on the affected shoulder.

Weakness and the inability to lift and fully extend the arm to perform everyday activities like brushing the hair or changing a shirt are also common symptoms of a rotator cuff injury.

Click here to learn more about the anatomy and mechanics of the rotator cuff, one of the key components of the human shoulder.

Depending on the nature and severity of the injury, orthopedic specialists will prescribe a conservative course of treatment involving rest, over the counter pain relievers and NSAIDs for swelling and inflammation and physical therapy. If conservative treatments don’t work, surgery could be an option.

What You Need to Know About Facial Implants

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Facial implant surgery involves placing implants, which are intricately formed solid materials compatible with human tissues, to enhance or augment the facial structure. Facial implants can uniquely balance disproportionate features, make a jaw line more prominent and bold, highlight your cheekbones and more. Many people choose facial implants to restore a more youthful, vibrant appearance.

The most common types of facial implants are:

· Chin implants – increase the size and projection of a chin while improving the proportion with the forehead and mid-face

· Jaw implants – increase the width of the lower third of your face and defines the jaw line

· Cheek implants – increase the projection of the cheekbones by adding volume to areas that appear recessed or flat

Who is the Best Candidate for Facial Implants?

The ideal candidate for facial implant surgery is a person whose skin has lost elasticity and tightness throughout the face, yet has enough surrounding facial skin to be repositioned successfully. If you are considering strengthening the appearance of your jaw or any other features on your face, the best way to decide if facial implants are a good fit for you is to have a consultation with a skilled plastic surgeon.

Procedure and Recovery

If you are considering one or more facial implant procedures, choose a board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure a successful surgery. Facial implants are normally performed in an office surgical site, outpatient surgery center, or hospital. Depending on the type of facial implant you choose, the procedure may take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour. Local anesthesia, either awake or sedated, or general anesthesia may be given.

Recovery from cheek implant surgery will involve some swelling and mild soreness, mainly in the cheek area. Your cheeks may feel tight due to increased volume. Recovery from chin implants is similar in that you may feel mild soreness and tightness around the site of surgery, in this case- the lower face. If you choose to have jaw implants, expect difficulty eating and moving your mouth for as long as one week. Movement of your jaw will improve over the next few months. All three types of facial implants will require resuming from normal activities and not eating solid food for a period of time. Pain medication may be prescribed to alleviate pain.
